Frequently Asked Questions About DUI's

No, a DUI in Rhode Island does not cause you to automatically lose you license. Until your first appearance in court, you will be able to keep your drivers license. The severity of the charges is the main factor for the determination of whether you will have your license suspended when you appear in Court. Your drivers license cannot be revoked or suspended by The Police.

If you agreed to chemical testing when you were charged with a criminal DUI Charge, you will keep your drivers license and privileges until your case is resolved, in most cases. The Court may place limitations on your operating privileges or suspend your license in cases involving multiple offenses or severe resulting injuries.

However, if  you were charged with a criminal DUI Charge, and you received a Traffic Violation resulting from refusal to submit a chemical test, the Judge at your court appearance in most cases will issue a preliminary suspension of your license.
